Service intervals are written as "every 7,500 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first," but few fleet owners can say off the top of their head which trigger a given truck will hit next or when. A high-mileage delivery van blows through the mileage limit in weeks; a backup vehicle that barely moves quietly crosses the six-month line instead. Missing either one is how a cheap oil change turns into a warranty argument or a seized engine.

This estimator takes the odometer at the last service, the odometer today, the vehicle's average daily miles and the days elapsed since service. It converts the remaining miles into days at your daily rate, compares that with the days left on the calendar interval, and tells you which trigger arrives first. It is a projection based on the daily mileage you enter, so a vehicle whose usage changes will drift from the estimate.

How to use this tool

  1. Pull the odometer reading and date from the last service record, and read today's odometer from the vehicle.
  2. Enter the mileage and time interval for the service you are tracking, such as an oil change or a DOT inspection.
  3. Add the vehicle's average miles per day, then read the miles remaining, the days remaining on each trigger and which one comes first.

What the math assumes

  • A month is counted as 30.44 days, the average over a calendar year.
  • The vehicle keeps driving at the average daily miles you enter, seven days a week; a change in route or driver will move the real due date.
  • Miles remaining can go negative, which means the vehicle is already past its mileage interval.
  • Whichever trigger arrives first is treated as the due point, matching the common "miles or months, whichever comes first" rule.
  • If the current odometer is lower than the last service odometer, the tool assumes zero miles driven since service rather than a negative figure.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate average miles per day for a vehicle?

Take the odometer difference over the last two to four weeks and divide by the number of calendar days in that span, including weekends and days the vehicle sat. That gives a rate that already reflects idle days.

What if the service is mileage-only or time-only?

Set the interval you do not use to 0. The tool then ignores that trigger, shows 0 for its miles and days outputs, and reports the due point from the remaining one.

Can I use this for hours-based equipment like generators or lifts?

Yes, if you treat engine hours as miles: enter hours in the odometer fields, the hour interval in the mileage interval field, and average hours per day in the daily miles field.
